Bau-biologie, or Building Biology, is the holistic study of the manmade environment, human health, and ecology; a living curriculum that brings together these three fields that are otherwise taught only autonomously.

The principles of Pau-biologie, which merged in Germany to address health problems associated with post-war housing construction, were brought to North America in 1987 by the renowned architect Helmut Zeihe, IBE's founder. They hold nature as the golden standard, and are based on the premise that what is healthy for the occupants (biologically compatible) is also god for the natural environment (ecologically sustainable). And these principles remain relevant today.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA has classified our unhealthy indoor environments as one of the top five health risks facing Americans today.
